Did you know you can recycle your holiday lights at WACOSA, year-round? WACOSA DocuShred and ThriftWorks! both have collection bins available for you to conveniently drop off your old holiday lights. (See below for drop-off address and hours.)
WACOSA started the holiday light recycling program in order to create work opportunities for some of the adults with disabilities who receive services at WACOSA. The lights are collected and then turned over to WACOSA’s clients who remove the bulb from the string of lights. Once the bulbs are removed the wire is then recycled. The revenue from the recycled cord is part of what is used to pay the clients who work on the light recycling job.
Ann Kennedy, WACOSA Sales and Marketing Director shares, “This is such a great program for our community. Recycling these lights means that these cords don’t end up in landfills, and the work is something that our folks really enjoy doing. We take lights year-round, and for that matter, we take any electrical cord that doesn’t have any adapter or appliance attached to it.”
WACOSA suggests just snipping the cords off appliances and removing any adapters before bringing in to recycle. The holiday lights however is what does create the work opportunities for adults with disabilities, so those are highly desirable.
