Step inside WACOSA ThriftWorks thrift store, and you’ll find it filled with treasures and shelves stocked with unique finds. But look closer, and you’ll discover something far more meaningful than a thrift store. Every purchase and donation is an investment in the lives of adults with disabilities.
WACOSA’s commitment extends far beyond providing affordable goods. The revenue generated by ThriftWorks thrift store helps to fuel a network of support designed to foster independence, create community connections, explore and pursue employment, build skills, advocate, and enrich the lives of the individuals we serve.
Empowering Voices Through Advocacy: Through advocacy programs, individuals gain the confidence and supports to navigate systems and advocate for themselves. WACOSA is involved with Disability Services Day at the State Capitol, as well as other trips to the Capitol, to meet with our local representatives. WACOSA invites local representatives to come and visit with our participants at WACOSA. We have a group of Ambassadors for Respect who speak to local 4th graders. These are just a few of the ways WACOSA assists the people we serve to have their voices heard.
Connecting with Community Through Volunteering: WACOSA Seniors, as well as other WACOSA programs, work hard to give back to our community. The WACOSA Seniors have established a local Aktion Club, a branch of the Kiwanis, where the focus is giving back to our community. The seniors paint wooden blocks for children in need, donate to local food shelves, schools, homeless shelters, churches, the Tri-County Humane Society, Anna Marie’s Alliance, and so much more. This not only provides a sense of purpose and belonging but also fosters valuable social connections and skill development while connecting us to the community.
Building Careers Through Work Opportunities: WACOSA believes in the power of work for those who chose it. ThriftWorks thrift store, for example, is a training program to help prepare our trainees for jobs within the community. We work closely with individuals to explore and pursue their employment goals. WACOSA offers assistance in community employment as well as some in-house opportunities by partnering with local business and manufacturing.
Unleashing Creativity Through the Arts: Recognizing the transformative power of creative expression, WACOSA offers a vibrant arts program that brings in professional talent from our community to assist in education in the arts. From painting to drama, individuals are encouraged to explore their talents, build confidence, and communicate in new and exciting ways.
Beyond these key areas, WACOSA provides a wide array of empowering skill-building activities. These include classes on essential life skills, programs focused on fostering social connections, and initiatives designed to promote greater independence in daily living.
